| 3. * | (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. | [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: [3]3 | From God, (owner) of the methods of ascent. | mn allh Xy alm`arj | |||
| 4. * | The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: | all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [4]4 [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years... | 5. * | Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). | Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: | So be patient, beautiful/graceful patience. | faSbr Sbra jmyla | |||
| 6. * | They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): | behold, men [6]6 look upon that [reckoning] as something far away - | That they truly, they see/understand it a distant/far. | anhm yrwnh b`yda | |||
| 7. * | But We see it (quite) near. | but, We see it as near! | And We see/understand it near/close. | wnrah qryba | |||
| 8. * | The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, | [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, | A day/time the sky/space becomes as the dead's puss/melted metal. | ywm tkwn alsma' kalmhl | |||
| 9. * | And the mountains will be like wool, | and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, | And the mountains become like the wool/dyed wool. | wtkwn aljbal kal`hn | |||
| 10. * | And no friend will ask after a friend, | and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, | And nor (a) concerned (relative/friend) asks/questions (about a) concerned (relative/friend). | wlaysAl Hmym Hmyma | |||
| 11. * | Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, | though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, | They make them see/understand; the criminal/sinner wishes/loves if he ransoms/compensates (sacrifices) with his sons from that day's torture (to save himself). | ybSrwnhm ywd almjrm lw yftdy mn `Xab ywmYX bbnyh | |||
| 12. * | His wife and his brother, | and of his spouse, and of his brother, | And his wife/companion/friend and his brother. | wSaHbth waKyh | |||
| 13. * | His kindred who sheltered him, | and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, | And his closest tribe/relations which shelters him/gives him refuge. | wfSylth alty tWwyh | |||
| 14. * | And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: | and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. | And whom (is) in the earth/Planet Earth all/all together, then (He) saves/rescues him. | wmn fy alarD jmy`a xm ynjyh | |||
| 15. * | By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- | But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, | No, but that it is blazing/flaming. | kla anha lZi | |||
| 16. * | Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- | tearing away his skin! | Pulling away/removing to the extremities/outer layer of skin. | nza`+ ll$wi | |||
| 17. * | Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). | It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right], and turn away [from the truth], | It calls who gave his back and turned away. | td`w mn adbr wtwli | |||
| 18. * | And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! | and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. | And gathered/collected, so he comprehended/accepted. | wjm` faw`i | |||
| 19. * | Truly man was created very impatient;- | VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. [7]7 | That truly the human/mankind was created worrisome/frightened. | an alansan Klq hlw`a | |||
| 20. * | Fretful when evil touches him; | [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; [8]8 | If the bad/evil/harm touched him, (he is) worrying/grievous and impatient. | aXa msh al$r jzw`a | |||
| 21. * | And niggardly when good reaches him;- | and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. | And if the goodness touched him, (he is) often preventing/prohibiting. | waXa msh alKyr mnw`a | |||
| 22. * | Not so those devoted to Prayer;- | Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. [9]9 | Except the praying. | ala almSlyn | |||
| 23. * | Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; | [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer | Those who (are) on their prayers continuing/lasting. | alXyn hm `li Slathm daYmwn | |||
| 24. * | And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. | and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them], | And those who in their properties/possessions (is) a known right/share. | walXyn fy amwalhm Hq m`lwm | |||
| 25. * | For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); | for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; [10]10 | For the asker/beggar and the deprived. | llsaYl walmHrwm | |||
| 26. * | And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; | and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; | And those who believe/confirm with the Judgment Day/Resurrection Day. | walXyn ySdqwn bywm aldyn | |||
| 27. * | And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- | and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement - | And those whom they are from their Lord's torture, are afraid/guarding/cautious. | walXyn hm mn `Xab rbhm m$fqwn | |||
| 28. * | For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- | for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; [11]11 | That truly their Lord's torture (is) not trusted/safe. | an `Xab rbhm Gyr mamwn | |||
| 29. * | And those who guard their chastity, | and who are mindful of their chastity, [12]12 | And those who to their genital parts (they are) protecting/guarding. | walXyn hm lfrwjhm HafZwn | |||
| 30. * | Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, | [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock] - : [13]13 for then, behold, they are free of all blame, | Except on (for) their spouses and what their rights owned/possessed (i.e.: care-givers of the sick, elderly and disabled under contract), so then they are not blameworthy/blamed. | ala `li azwajhm aw mamlkt aymanhm fanhm Gyr mlwmyn | |||
| 31. * | But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- | whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; | So who desired/wished beyond that, so those, they are the transgressors/violators. | fmn abtGi wra' Xlk fawlYk hm al`adwn | |||
| 32. * | And those who respect their trusts and covenants; | and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: | And those who, to their deposits/securities and their promise/contracts, (they are) protecting/observing. | walXyn hm lamanathm w`hdhm ra`wn | |||
| 33. * | And those who stand firm in their testimonies; | and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; | And those who, they are with their testimonies (they are) taking care of. | walXyn hm b$hadathm qaYmwn | |||
| 34. * | And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- | and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. | And those who, they are on their prayers (they are) protecting/observing. | walXyn hm `li Slathm yHafZwn | |||
| 35. * | Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). | These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! | Those are in treed gardens/paradises honoured. | awlYk fy jnat mkrmwn | |||
| 36. * | Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee- | WHAT, THEN, is amiss with such as are bent on denying the truth, that they run about confusedly to and fro before thee, | So why (is it) those who disbelieved (are) coming, rushing in fear towards/in front of you ? | fmal alXyn kfrwa qblk mhT`yn | |||
| 37. * | From the right and from the left, in crowds? | [coming upon thee] from the right and from the left, in crowds? [14]14 | Groups of people/relations from the right (side), and from the left (side). | `n alymyn w`n al$mal `zyn | |||
| 38. * | Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss? | Does every one of them hope to enter [by this means] a garden of bliss? [15]15 | Does every/each human from them wish/covet that (E) he enters a treed garden/paradise (of) comfort and ease ? | ayTm` kl amrY mnhm an ydKl jn+ n`ym | |||
| 39. * | By no means! For We have created them out of the (base matter) they know! | Never! For, behold, We have created them out of something that they know [only too well]! [16]16 | No but that We created them from what they know. | kla ana Klqnahm mma y`lmwn | |||
| 40. * | Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly- | But nay! I call to witness [Our being] the Sustainer of all the points of sunrise and sunset: [17]17 verily, well able are We | So I do not swear/make oath with the sun rises'/easts', and the sunsets'/wests' Lord, that We are capable/able (E). | fla aqsm brb alm$arq walmGarb ana lqadrwn | |||
| 41. * | Substitute for them better (men) than they; And We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan). | to replace them with [people] better than they are; for there is nothing to prevent Us [from doing what We will]. | 42. * | So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!- | Hence, leave them to indulge in idle talk and play [with words] [19]19 until they face that [Judgment] Day of theirs which they have been promised - | So leave them plunge into/engage in conversation and play/amuse until they meet/find their day/time which they are being promised. | fXrhm yKwDwa wyl`bwa Hti ylaqwa ywmhm alXy yw`dwn | |||
| 43. * | The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchres in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them),- | the Day when they shall come forth in haste from their graves, as if racing towards a goal-post, | A day/time they appear/emerge from the graves quickening/rushing as if they are to monuments/slaughter places running/hurrying. | ywm yKrjwn mn alajdax sra`a kanhm ali nSb ywfDwn | |||
| 44. * | Their eyes lowered in dejection,- ignominy covering them (all over)! such is the Day the which they are promised! | with downcast eyes, with ignominy overwhelming them: that Day which they were promised again and...
